Who we are
RAVEN EYE is a coordination app for community farm-watch operations: one map with everyone on it, orders sent and acknowledged inside the app, push-to-talk voice and alarms. It is made and run by Skyridge Tech Labs ("we", "us").
RAVEN EYE is in private testing, and only people invited by their watch can reach it. This policy explains what RAVEN EYE collects, why, who sees it and how long it is kept. It covers the RAVEN EYE apps for Android and iPhone and the RAVEN EYE web app, which are one service.
Signing in
While RAVEN EYE is in testing, Cloudflare Access decides who can reach it: you enter your email address, receive a one-time code, and only invited addresses are let in.
Inside RAVEN EYE you sign on with a call sign you choose, not your name, and a role: HQ, tactical, observer or blocker. A field role needs no account and no password.
What RAVEN EYE collects, and why
- Your call sign and role, so HQ and the team know who is who.
- The gear you declare for the night, such as a radio, a thermal scope or a firearm, so HQ can decide who to send where. You choose what to declare, and you may declare nothing.
- Your precise location, while you are signed on, so HQ can see where everyone is and send people to the right place, and so your map can show how far you are from a point. The phone apps keep sharing your location while the screen is locked or the app is in the background, until you sign out. On Android a RAVEN EYE notification stays on screen while this happens; on an iPhone the location indicator shows. This is how the team still sees you once your phone is in your pocket.
- Your compass heading, and while you hold SIGHT, the direction you are pointing, shown live on the map.
- Your voice, only while you hold a talk button. It is sent live to the people you are talking to, and it is never recorded or stored.
- What you write and do in the operation: chat and messages, your answers to orders and alarms, and suspect sightings. A sighting is a place and a time, never a name, photo or description of a person.
- Whether your phone is connected, and when you signed on and off.
- In the web app only, if you switch on ALARM WHEN CLOSED: the push address your browser gives us, so an alarm can reach your phone. Switching it off removes it.
Who can see it
- HQ, the person running the operation, sees all of the above for everyone signed on.
- Other members signed on see your call sign, team and position, whether you are connected, and your gear if they tap on you. Your orders, and messages written to you, are only for you and the sender.
- No one else. We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. RAVEN EYE has no advertising, and no analytics or tracking tools.
How long it is kept
- Location and heading: only your current position is held, in our server's memory, while you are signed on. It is never saved, no history of where you went is kept, and it is not part of any record.
- Voice: not kept at all.
- The operation in progress: orders, messages, chat, alarms, sightings, and who was signed on with what gear are saved on our server so that a restart does not lose them. They are no longer used once they are twelve hours old.
- The record of each operation: the same events with their times, never positions or voice, are kept on our server so that HQ can review the operation and download a report of it. During testing, records are deleted on request. A fixed period for keeping them will be set before RAVEN EYE is offered beyond testing.
- On your phone: RAVEN EYE keeps a random identifier for the phone, the call sign and role you last used (for twelve hours, so you can come back without signing on again), your last gear choice and your display settings. Signing out with BACK forgets the call sign and role, and uninstalling the app removes everything it kept.
Services we use
- Cloudflare controls who can reach RAVEN EYE during testing (your email address and the one-time code) and carries the connection between your phone and our server. Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Hetzner Online hosts our server. Hetzner's privacy policy.
- Map imagery comes from Google (satellite imagery) and, as a fallback, from South Africa's national aerial imagery by the Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information, served by aerial.openstreetmap.org.za. Your phone fetches the images for the area on screen directly from these services, so they see your phone's internet address and which part of the map is shown. They receive nothing else from RAVEN EYE.
These providers may process information outside South Africa.
Permissions the app asks for
- Location, to put you on the map, including while the screen is locked as described above.
- Microphone, used only while you hold a talk button.
- Notifications, for alarms and messages.
You can refuse these, or turn them off later in your phone's settings. The parts of RAVEN EYE that need them will not work without them.
Security
Connections are encrypted, only invited people can reach RAVEN EYE during testing, and HQ's controls need HQ's own sign-in. No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach that affects your personal information, we will tell you and the Information Regulator.
Your rights
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) you may ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to how it is used. Write to admpjs@outlook.com. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may complain to the Information Regulator.
Children
RAVEN EYE is for adult members of watch operations. It is not intended for children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new effective date.
